Artist Statement/Bio: With a biology degree, and in the midst of a MSc degree, I never could have predicted the twists and turns my life was about to take. I had planned to begin a Ph.D. program, but the Fates decided to weave a new color in to the pattern of my life. During the time off between graduate programs I studied pottery and stained glass and enrolled in the first of a series of metalsmithing classes and workshops. So, when funding for my PhD fell through, I turned to the arts.
I have never lost the fascination and wonder that nature inspires in me and that is so strongly reflected in my work. I have managed over the years to remain active in science – most recently as a wildlife biologist in Bolivia, South America.
Living and working in Bolivia was an amazing experience. We were there for 6 years, spending time in tropical forests that had been touched very little by humans, rich in color, scent, and sound, and immersed in a vibrant and varied culture. This time also provided me a “creative sabbatical” to focus on my jewelry. My time there affected me deeply, not only in how I perceive life in general but it has also strongly influenced my artwork.
We returned from Bolivia the summer of 2002, with a new 6 month old baby boy, a new home in these mountains we love dearly, and a new position for my husband at Ferrum College. Since returning I have been busy reestablishing my studio and art career, and have added another child to the roster – this one a daughter. I am constantly learning and exploring new ways to create and express myself - the continual rediscovery of this creative process makes it a delight to get up and go to work each morning. |
